Celebrate Bushcare!
Bushcare volunteers are invited to the 2009 end-of-year barbeque to celebrate another successful year of bushcare.
It will be held on Sunday 29 November 2009 at Cascade Gardens. For more information, please view the invitation.
Following the success of the recent Weed Buster Week, the Fern Tree Bushcare Group is now working on a strategic method with private land owners to target key weed areas that are impacting on the reserves and bushland values of Fern Tree and Wellington Park.
Fern Tree residents who plan to remove weeds from their property, can contact Council and the Bushcrew will come and take away the weed material by appointment only. This collection service is available until 14 December 2009.
If you would like to participate in the private land program or arrange collection of weed material, please contact Council's Bushcare Co-ordinator, Sonya Stallbaum, on
6238 2884 or stallbaums@hobartcity.com.au.
Over the years, many of the bushland reserves around Hobart have become degraded and native animals and plants have disappeared. The Bushcare Program aims to involve the community in the on-ground management of Hobart's bushland reserves. Bushcare groups meet regularly to undertake weed removal, planting, water quality and wildlife monitoring to restore the natural environment.
Backyard Bandicoots is a website full of facts about the Bushcare icon the Eastern Barred Bandicoot. A teaching package is downloadable for middle and upper primary school students (years 2-6). The kit is packed with colourful illustrations, games and educational activities designed to deliver information about Eastern Barred Bandicoot ecology and practical ways to strengthen local populations of this threatened species.
The Bandicoot Times is a quarterly newsletter produced by the Bushland and Reserves Unit. The newsletter aims to promote Hobart's bushcare groups and bushcare principles within the community.
The newsletter contains information and articles about bushcare activities, special events and flora and fauna issues.
There are fifteen bushcare groups working to protect, enhance and rehabilitate Hobart's bushland. The program gives detailed information about working bees each month and about how you can become involved.
You are welcome to attend any of the Bushcare Working Bees throughout Hobart. Volunteers and the Council work together to tackle bushcare issues in reserves.
