Australian water authorities have developed standards for hydrant installations alongside public roads and highways. This has improved the deployment of fire protection equipment.
Serious bush fires in NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania have resulted in interstate fire-fighting assistance highlighting the need to assist fire-fighting personnel by having standard marking and equipment regimes which can be easily located, recognised, and be compatible with all types of equipment.
The guidelines were written with an aim to assist in creating uniformity of approach in public fire-fighting systems in highway reservations. The basic objective is to assist in the rapid deployment and effectiveness of fire protection equipment to fight fires either in buildings or in the bush. The guidelines address most aspects of hydrant design, installation, maintenance and replacement.
