Highways

There are several roads in Hobart that are not the responsibility of the Hobart City Council.  The State Government is responsible for:

  • The Southern Outlet
  • The Tasman Highway
  • The Domain Highway
  • Brooker Avenue (North of Burnett Street)

The Council is responsible for the nature strips and footpaths beside all of these state roads except the Southern Outlet which is a State responsibility.

Any requests regarding these highways can be directed to the State Government on 1300 135 513.

Vehicle crossings and driveways

Access driveways over kerb and gutters, footpaths and nature strips are the responsibility of the property owner from the edge of the bitumen roadway to the property boundary.  Where a number of properties share a driveway they share joint responsibility.  Council does however give advice on construction and maintenance of vehicle crossings.  Council will arrange for new crossings or for alterations and repairs using accredited contractors and/or Council's own workforce at the property owner's expense.

If you wish to arrange for vehicle crossing works please call 6238 2753 or email hcc@hobartcity.com.au.

Street cleaning

Council undertakes a street cleaning and public litterbin collection service.  In general suburban streets and footpaths are cleaned every 10 to 12 weeks.  Streets in the Central Business District, Sullivans Cove and other commercial areas are cleaned on a more regular basis.  Council also has in place an Autumn Leaf Cleaning program, which usually commences in May.

Any requests regarding these services should be directed to Council's Civic Solutions on 6278 0200 or email hcc@hobartcity.com.au.

Right of ways

Council is not responsible for right of ways on private land.  In general the maintenance and operation of these private right of ways is the responsibility of those who own the land or those who have rights of access over the land.

Unsealed roads

There are six kilometres of unsealed roads in Hobart's boundaries.  Maintenance and upgrading of these roads is the legal responsibility of the landowners who have frontage onto these roads.  However Council grades most formed unsealed roads twice a year (usually in October and May).

If you have a query regarding unsealed roads or are aware of a hazard on an unsealed road please call 6238 2836 or email hcc@hobartcity.com.au.

Excavation works in the road reservation by other authorities and/or contractors

Other authorities, contractors and any individual intending to carry out any works within Hobart's road reserves require approval by the Road Engineering Unit.  Prior to approving works, Council will need to assess the impact these works will have on Council's road and underground assets, motorists, pedestrians and nearby residents.  Prior to commencing any works a Road Opening Permit is required to be issued.
